What is limiting you?
November 15, 2007 – 12:58 pmI have discovered that people often begin to change their attitudes and thereby their thought patterns and actions, if they can be persuaded to think deeply enough about themselves. You know, the why am I here, who am I really, what difference do I/can I make, what really matters, type questions.
As a teacher I encourage many of my students to ponder even such simple questions as “What do you hope to achieve today?”. Many will give up and say that their head hurts too much when they contemplate this and even simpler questions. As I see it, the pace of life dictates (self-imposed limitation) that we speed on through this exercise (maths for example), this lesson, this day, in order to arrive at the next day and so on until we reach the goal (usually a self-imagined limitation).
There is an irrational fear of being left behind, of not being “there” when we need to be there. When, in fact, we do not really need to be anywhere nor dance according to someones music nor achieve their schedule of outcomes. When we truly realise the freedom with which we can be endowed, very little of what goes on around us is of any consequence.
As I see it, that realisation of what really matters comes when we begin to understand that rearranged pond scum is nothing more than rearranged pond scum. We have all been and still are being offered theories of the origins of life that are really recipes for death. Death by slow, inevitable, ever-increasing bonds (limitations) on our personal, spiritual and emotional lives.
It comes back to the purpose of life. For me and you and everyone else, it is what we perceive it to be at this point in time. If that perception is shaped by external, self-imposed or self-imagined limitations that negatively impact our freedoms then our purpose will be less than fulfilling when measured up against our innermost desires, hopes and dreams.
Identify every limitation on your life right now. Which ones are irrational? Which ones were passed down from your parents? Which ones truly work together with your heartfelt desires? Which ones do you put on yourself? Get rid of those that are not good and work within those that help you.
Enjoy life.
