Steps to success with an online business

January 7, 2008 – 11:53 am

SuccessThere really is more than enough “success” to go around every single person who wants a piece of it. The key is perspiration. So get out your deodorant and starting applying it. Business success is more than just a dream for those who apply themselves.

What is SUCCESS?

Success, it has been claimed, is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. That is, the vision of success is based on an inspired idea, but turning that vision into reality is where you put in the hard work that turns that idea into action and eventually a profit. I must not be one-sided. Make sure you are exchanging value for value. I would not advocate selling anything unless both the buyer and seller were to gain from the deal. To be truly successful, exchange something of value in every transaction.

In any case, inspiration and perspiration both have their challenges and roadblocks so here are some tips to get you going.

Inspriation Starts the Journey to Success

Everyone reading this has a storehouse of knowledge, expertise and wisdom in how to deal with things life sends your way. It is often from within this vast storehouse that a profitable idea begins to surface. Stop and think right now. What are you most passionate about?

Take some time now to think back over the challenges you have overcome, something that you now feel really passionate about having truly beaten. It might be giving up some habit. Losing that extra bit of weight. Getting that raise at work. Tweaking your model plane until it flies real sweet. What areas of life who you truly experienced success?

Who else may be faced with this same challenge? The law of statistics says that you’re not the only one who had to face that challenge. There are many other people who are, right now, trying to beat the same thing. Do you want to help them taste success? This is one place from which I draw my inspiration.

When you align something about which you are passionate with a market segment of buyers who share the same passion and related challenges, you have an inspirational idea that can be turned into a win-win product which equals business success.

Perspiration is a Key Ingredient in All Successful Businesses

Start writing about how you felt when you finally beat the challenge. What obstacles you came up against. The tricks and tips you may have used to convince your mind something isn’t as it seems. Write down anything and everything that played a part in your journey to success.

Promote Your Solution To A Common Problem

Promote your solution to this challenge or problem via the Internet. This can be the hardest part for some people and is often the biggest obstacle. Because of the technical nature of the medium many are paralyzed at this point. It is with no reservation that I offer one possible solution. That is SiteBuildIt. That will link to one of my other posts about this really useful all-encompassing suite of tools for helping you get an Internet website up and running with all the tweaks that you need to be really successful. And you don’t need to know a great deal about the technical side, it is mostly taken care of by the product. SiteBuildIt (SBI) also assists with writers block and helps you put together your ideas into multiple pages of structured content.

Fine-Tune Your Online Presence

I am working with a couple of other projects right now but even before I make a profit with SBI, I can already see its value. That is why I am promoting it now. But, and it is a very big but, you must be prepared to really work on it. If not, then SBI is not for you. There are many other avenues for building a website. By “work on it”, I mean doing research, looking to see what competition is around, asking potential customers what they really want, and a number of other factors. Let’s face it, if you want to build a successful Internet based business, stuff is not going to just fall in your lap. Some sales pitches will tell you otherwise. You have seen them … “Buy this $199 product, spend 2 hours per month on it and start raking in the cash”. I do not support these products and will not recommend them to you.

Domain Names Are Important - The Right One Will Help You Succeed

You might decide to buy a domain name, host a site, put up a sales page, buy traffic and then convert that traffic to sales. There are many products (e-books) available to tell you how to do this. Some are probably good value for money, some are probably not. I cannot offer you any advice in that area as sales pages and quick bucks are not my style. Some people will taste success this way, many will not. Just go and read a few forums. The Internet marketplace is littered with sales pages owned by hopeful people who feel that they have been ripped off. They fell for the sales pitch about how to set up an Internet business selling something, and nothing quite worked out as planned. There are even people who are not successful with SBI. They talk about it on the SBI forums.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

There are many variables involved and not everyone who starts out will be successful. I want to help you reduce the risk of failure. The advice I offer via this blog is to help you bypass the minefields and avoid the traps set to take money off you and leave you with very little.

The reason why I like the SBI concept is because it takes pretty much everything into account and guides you down the rather narrow path to having a truly successful online presence. You could use SBI even if you don’t want to make a profit, just build a big online community with some mutual point of interest.

Well Planned Websites Generate Traffic

A well planned website and well written content is what builds traffic. Traffic is your source of lifeblood on the Internet. But who wants visitors to turn up to a website only to be faced with a sales pitch? I want visitors who find this site to be able to read and take away ideas without having to pay for them. I want to give first and then when you feel that you have truly gained some valuable insight, you may like to try out some of the products I have suggested or even some that I have personally developed. You gain something, I gain something. We both win. That’s just my style.

Once you have traffic, and this is a really short article that doesn’t go into any real depth about that very complex issue, you need to monetize it appropriately. If 1000 people visit your site per day and 2% of them like what they read and decide to try some of what you offer, you have 20 paying customers. If you were to make $20 per sale, or referral if you are promoting another persons product, that is $400 per day. Who would like to earn $400 per day? Put another way, who would like to earn $2,800 per week? That’s just under $150,000 per year!

My Solution To The Website and Web Host Problem

I urge you to take another look at SBI. Here is the link to my previous post about it. It takes care of attracting traffic. Good quality, organic traffic that comes by your site with a positive attitude, not having been whisked there by a slick sales page.

Would you like to join me in my journey to financial success, freedom from working for a boss, early retirement and all that? This blog is where I will continue to post the story of my journey. It started in 2007 and is going to grow beyond even my biggest dreams in 2008.

Sign up using the window at the top right side of this page and I promise you that I will continue to share tips and tricks that I have discovered or developed to become a successful Internet business owner. Many will be shared for free and I plan to charge a fee for some premium content. Would you like to get in early and take advantage of huge reductions for the first few days of each product release? If that is you, get yourself on the mailing list.

Here’s hoping you too can taste Internet Business Success,

Brendan.

  2. I’ve been reading blogs by James Braush, Richard Lee and Jack Keifer for a few weeks now. That is how I found your blog. I don’t know, the more I read, the more it all sounds so familiar. Like watching late night “infomercials” on “How to become a millionaire in less than a year”. I mean, you all make a dvd or cd of “how to make money”. And so much is said against people with a J.O.B. What about the restraunt you ate lunch at today? What if all those people decided to sit home and write a blog instead of serving your lunch?

  3. Hi Katie,

Thanks for being so honest. I appreciate that.

Just to set the record straight, I do not sell DVDs, CDs or ebooks with that title nor do I plan to sell anything with a title anything like it. It has been so over-done just like the infomercials you refer to.

Think of my blog as a continuously updated autobiography. I have worked in regular jobs for over 20 years (engineer, teacher, software designer, etc). If it turns into a paying hobby then I guess that is my gain. But, as you may have read elsewhere, I operate on a win-win basis. I do not intend to sell a dead product or service that is there simply to make me money. It will always be something that I have used and have found to be worthy of a recommendation.

Think of Internet businesses as just another part of a complex economy. The restaurant owner, along with thousands of businesses worldwide rely on the services of people like me and allied internet business operators to advertise for new customers, communicate with the public and design their websites.

Once again Katie, thanks for your honesty.
