Steps to success with an online business
January 31, 2008 – 8:50 pmThere really is more than enough “success” to go around every single person who wants a piece of it. The key is often perspiration. So get out your deodorant and starting applying it.
Success, it is often quoted, is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. That is, the vision of success is based on an inspired idea, but turning that vision into reality is where you put in the hard work that turns that idea into action and eventually a profit. It must not be one-sided. Make sure you are exchanging value for value. I would not advocate selling anything unless both the buyer and seller were to get value from the deal. You might be thinking that both usually do gain, one gets a product or service, the other gets paid. What I mean is l-a-s-t-i-n-g value. Value that makes the buyer want to see what else you offer. Value that builds trust.
In any case, inspiration and perspiration both have their challenges and roadblocks so here are some tips to get you going if you’re stuck.
Tips to encourage Inspiration
1. Get enough sleep.
2. Eat healthy.
3. Give up coffee or at least cut down (and the same goes for any other drugs for that matter).
4. Stop occasionally to re-assess what you want out of life. Once you have that back firmly in the centre of your mind, get back to making it happen.
5. That’s all. No magic. Just repeat steps 1 to 4 as often as you can and go think up a storm.
Tips to make “Perspiration” profitable
1. An adviser of mine suggests that many people feel overwhelmed when they first start out on the Internet business journey. His answer is to apply BAM - Brain and Motivation. We all have a brain so that just leaves motivation. Many different things motivate different people so there is no one answer to write here. What I can say though is this:
The biggest single thing that tricks people into thinking they are getting somewhere, only to find out that they have been going nowhere, is that activity is often mistaken for accomplishment. Assess every action you are taking and make sure it is accomplishing something, at least one thing, positive towards achieving your dream. Each little positive step towards achieving your dream will then build your level of motivation. You will gain momentum and you will go forward much faster.
2. Success is developed daily, not in one day. Be patient and build layer upon layer. Do not rush into things such as choosing a domain name, buying traffic through ads, signing up to every “lucrative looking” affiliate program. Rather, start with a plan, work on the plan a step at a time, keep the momentum going and check off each step as it is accomplished. In a future post I will be including a link to a plan I have developed and have been using. It is working so far and I would like to share it with anyone who wants to use it. Watch out for it in the next couple of posts.
3.Trust and integrity are two important foundations of ongoing success. Do not take shortcuts if it will compromise your integrity. Build trust with your clients/visitors and they will stick with you for the long term. All that work can amount to very little if you start messing with trust and doing things that damage your integrity and reputation. Deliver, in fact, over-deliver quality products and services and respect every one of your clients, every time.
4. Give your clients the best you can. Keep nothing back. That way, as they begin to experience greater levels of success, they will lift you up to your own greater levels of success. They will rave about you to their friends, they will link to your site, everything they do to thank you for your belief in their success will take you to even higher levels of success. This could be summed up like this:
To add growth to your business, sell people just what they need - To multiply your business, sell people not just what they need, but give them the tools to fill the needs of others. It is like the difference between giving a hungry person a loaf of bread compared with giving them the skills to bake bread.
I hope this short brain-dump has helped you. I am learning so much from being online and working through my plan for success.
I am not planning on becoming just another Internet Marketing person selling products to help others become Internet Marketing people who sell products … and so on. Rather, I am using this blog as a launching pad into the wider world of content development and delivery. I cannot reveal exactly what my next site will look like, but it is well into the planning stage.
I will keep you posted.
Brendan.
PS. Remember that it is acceptable to make mistakes. Acknowledge them, try to not repeat them and move on. I have made some mistakes already, and that might be the subject of a future post, but I am learning all the time. If you wait until you believe you have it all worked out and will not make any mistakes, you will be waiting all your life and never accomplish anything.

Hi Brendan,
I really liked your comment in the final P.S. - it’s so true about making mistakes - I’ve made a few in my time & still making them (not intentionally though) and slowly learning to get myself out there & learn as I go along.
Thanks for the inspiration - look forward to reading more.
