It doesn’t all have to be done today

January 2, 2009 – 2:30 pm

Many internet business hopefuls have an inbox, or two. It is packed with affiliate information, article ideas, the latest web 2.0 strategies and a number of those tasks many of us keep putting off till tomorrow.

This all creates stress. You set the alarm for 4am to try to get through all this stuff. By 6am your family is up and getting ready for school/work and they are demanding your attention. By 9am you have completed two tasks and yet your inbox seems to be just as full as when you started. Stress levels build and you think about making a priority list so that you can plough through the rest of the inbox before 6pm tonight.

If you want any quality of life - don’t bother with trying to clear that inbox by 6pm!

The stress created by trying to clear it out in a day - and that rarely happens - works to prevent you from being productive.

Take a look at that priority list. Does it have any entries about spending time with your loved ones? Are there periods of relaxation or meditation scheduled in among the higher priorities? Are you placing all those “to-do” jobs ahead of the people that matter most in your life?

It doesn’t all have to be done today. In fact, anyone in any type of business should never be able to say “It is all done - there is nothing else to do”.

By definition, the inbox is meant to contain things to do. It is not meant to be empty. There will always be projects that need your attention, phone calls to make and other work to be done.

Think of it this way. If your inbox is regularly full then your time is in demand. You are an important part of your business.

However, no matter what is in the inbox, your sense of happiness and satisfaction with life and your relationship with your loved ones are more important.

Using up all of your energy trying to get it all done today will put pressure on more important areas of your life. Weight it up and you decide. Do you want to get it all done today, and then repeat that tomorrow and again the next day … until the day you drop? Or do you want to do what you can realistically do today and still maintain important relationships and a sense of peace within yourself?

It doesn’t all have to be done today!
