I just read an interesting post over at Richard Lee’s blog about the difference between setting goals and making promises. In it, Richard refers to an idea of Bill Bartmann’s about how:
- We can fail to achieve a goal and not feel too bad about it but …
- If we break a promise it means a whole lot more to us.
He goes on to say that to improve your chance of achieving our goals we need to stop setting goals!
Rather, make promises. It is semantics to be sure, but our brains are wired in such a way as to want to keep our promises yet we can so easily let goals slip by.
So I think I will take that advice on board and start making promises and not set any more goals.
You can read the whole post over at Richard Lee’s blog. In fact, he has a lot of good stuff over there so take a few moments and read what else Richard has overcome during the last few years.
Brendan.
