Follow your intuition

January 27, 2008 – 5:21 pm

I have been encouraged many times to go with my gut instinct and, more often than not, it is the best option. I have often suggested it to others when they seem to be pondering some significant decision.

Have you been faced with a decision when out of nowhere an answer just drops into your head? It seems like the right way to go, it even feels right, but you don’t take it because you didn’t arrive at that decision by considering all options and alternatives.

How does gut feeling or intuition come to you? For me, it just seems to be there. From my experience these intuitive answers or responses are quite often the best alternative. I have spent many hours, and sometimes days, agonizing over a matter only to come to the same conclusion that came to me in a moment of inspiration moments after first becoming aware of the matter. Those hours and days end up being wasted.

If I took the seemingly intuitive path and it ended up being wrong, then you could say that if I had invested the necessary hours or days I might have saved myself a lot of heartache or money or both. I haven’t taken detailed notes of every occurrence where my intuitive response ended up being the right response, but it does seem like it happens in the majority of cases.

In future I think I will just take the risky option. That is, I will implement the gut feeling response first and ask questions later. It may be a bit risky, but I would rather be in the right place at the right time by “following my gut” than being safe and miss out on an opportunity.

This blog would not have been started if I had sat down and analyzed it, built a business case, considered all options, and so on. I would have probably still been in “analysis paralysis”, as I have heard it called. But no, I decided to just launch into it and see where it would go. I am happy to report that it has been a wonderful springboard into the online world. I have learned so much from other bloggers whom I probably would not have met if I was still building the case for starting a blog.

The next time you are faced with a decision, consider taking the intuitive option, go with your gut.

Brendan.
