Do something nice for someone else

January 3, 2009 – 2:30 pm

Many of us will have seen, read or heard about this principle before. It has been called:

  • pay it forward
  • a random act of kindness
  • blessing others

Whatever our level of faith, doing something nice for someone else will often elevate our sense of peace and help develop feelings of goodwill.

A more powerful aspect of this is to do something nice but don’t tell anyone else! Instead of sharing the delight with others, we get to keep all those good feelings for ourselves. We have a secret the world does not know and it is a most pleasant secret.

It could be quirky, such as paying for the toll for the next 3 cars behind you. That way, the drivers in the 2nd and 3rd cars think it was the driver in front who paid the toll.

It does not matter that a random act of kindness is anonymous. In fact, it is the best type. You always feel good when giving to others. By not sharing the act, all that good feeling stays within.

What has this got to do with internet business?

Although it might be difficult to keep it a secret, add a link to your blog or website to someone whose work you admire. Do not ask for a link in return. Simply do it and get on with life. Make a comment on a blog or forum and include really great content in your comment. Do not leave your website URL; just contribute positively to the discussion.

Give something free to all your newsletter subscribers. Do it without any fanfare.

Reduce the price on one of your products when customers get to the sales page. They might click on a link to purchase a product for $27. When they get to the payment screen, give them a 50% discount just because you are feeling generous this week and want to reward people with not only a great product but and excellent price. It will make a bigger impact on them than having the usual graphics showing that the price is $197, $147, $97, $47, $27, $13.50. Try it and see what happens.

Can you think of any other ways of doing something nice for someone else and not telling anyone about it? Leave a comment below.
